The Lower Sac continues to fish really really GOOD! I guided Diane from Danville and Steve from San Ramon on Saturday. The pair wanted to mix things up, so we swung nymphs and small streamers on light spey rods and hooked fish,we nymphed under indicators and hooked fish, we cast dries to rising fish and hooked up!
With the current low flows providing lots of good areas to wade and the coming of spring the Lower Sac is offering up outstanding fly fishing right now! Dont miss out!

Solid Fishing
I guided Bob from Fremont and Fred from Carmel today, we had HIGH winds today on the Lower Sac which usually means poor fishing but not today! In spite of the howling wind we managed to hook dozens of fish, Fiesty Rainbows mostly 14″ to 16″ with a few 18″ fish in the mix.The nymph grab was solid all day with a little lull in the action between 3:30 and 4:30, the Sac should continue to fish well, Spring has just begun! Book Now!
Beautiful weather
The calender might still say it’s Winter but it sure feels allot like Spring here,I guided Steve from Sparks today on the Lower Sac, the fishing was good and the weather was fantastic ! How can you not have a good time. Steve hooked a dozen or more wild rainbows up to 18″, the nymph grab was best in the late A.M. but continued on all day. Small dark caddis nymph imitations worked the best and there was a good hatch of small caddis but few fish looking up.The Lower Sac will continue to fish great and the weather has been awesome !
cold cold cold
I guided the Grunbaum family over the last few days and even though the temps were in the 20s and 30s the fishing has held up. We hooked and landed Steelhead everyday, mostly nice bright winter run 4-6 lbs.and an occasional Fall fish in full spawning color. There is still plenty of time to book a trip for this season. If the season so far is any indication, I anticipate that we will have a good number of Steelhead in the system through early March as well as the occasional Brown.
Fresh Fish
I guided Brady from San Francisco on Tues., Brady has embraced the Spey rod and in a few short years has become quite proficient. We swung up three nice wild winter Steelhead in the 4-5 lb range. The big rain event we had a couple weeks back moved most if not all of the Fall run into the upper river and / or their individual tributaries. The up side is that it sucked up a batch of bright wild winter fish !The fishing remains solid on the Trinity and even with the cold water temps FRESH WILD WINTER STEELHEAD will still move to grab a swung fly.The next storm system coming in this Thurs night through the weekend has the potential to put quite a bit snow on the ground and could impact travel and access to the river so be sure to call ahead !
Winter angling options
- All Smiles!!!
I fished with Kevin from Alameda on Sunday, it was Kevins first time on the Trinity and his first Steelhead experience. Kevin landed two nice adult Steelhead and had a few other incounters, he caught the Steelhead Stoke as well!
If you’re not interested in the Trinity there are other options that will soon be available on the Northern California Coast for fresh chrome and if Steelhead aren’t your thing there are Trout options as well, Lewiston Lake continues to fish well for Rainbow’s throughout the winter and the Lower Sac in Redding is always a good choice for Trout.
Still Producing
- beautiful wild hen
- Nice 28″ hatchery buck
I fished with Bill and Robert from Danville on Thurs and Fri. Still plenty of fish around and even with the heavy pressure most anglers still seem to scratch out some fish. We have been getting rain over the last couple of days but not enough to change water conditions much. We are expecting some heavier rains Sat afternoon and night, maybe enough to add some volume and color to the Trinity.
Fishing continues to hold strong for Fall fish and should be good through the Holidays at which point we should start to see the arrival of our Winter run.
Mixin it up…
I guided Scott from Montery on Fri and we had a great day of fishing despite the heavy pressure. We swung up 3 Steelhead on the Spey rod fishing small traditional patterns and another 6 or more on the indicator. The water remains low and clear so a stealthy approach and good presentations go a long way in hooking fish right now.
Hot Fish
I guided Tom from San Jose Sat and Sun, fishing was good landing was not! Tom hooked several fish each day but all were a little larger than normal and a heck of a lot hotter. Tom got an education on playing hot steelhead. There are plenty of steelhead in the system and looking like it might remain this way for the season…book your trip now!
Fishing well
I guided the father and son duo of Walter and Roger from Woodside the last couple of days. We have had some rain up here but not enough to raise the flows or add any color to the river, having said that the fishing remains good for a mix of hatchery and wild steelhead. We hooked six and landed three on Thurs and went 2 for 2 today. The fishing pressure is moderate but gets a little heavy on the weekends. If you havn’t already it’s the time now to book a trip on the Trinity, looking to be a very good year.
