The conditions over the last three weeks on the Trinity have changed little, We have had a number of fronts push through but none have delivered much rain, we need inches not tenths ! With the low water both the Steelhead and anglers continue to be stacked up in a few locations making for some tough angling. Having said that any given day can produce ! Spey casting and swinging flies may open up more of the river to you and can offer less crowded fishing, may not account for more hookups but can make for a more pleasurable day ! One big rain event will change everything !

Nice push
- a beauty
- Great clients, Great fish Great Day !
I had a Great day yesterday with husband and wife Hayden and Sara from Woodland. Fishing started a little slow but quickly picked up when we encountered a fresh push of 6-8 lb hatchery steelhead, all bucks ! I think the little bit of rain we have had recently is getting fish to move and currently there are good numbers from Lewiston to Pigeon Point.
Fish On !
- Great Scenery
- Doubles were not uncommon
- Fish On !
I spent the last 3 days on Lewiston lake with Al and Emil, the fishing was stellar, most of the Rainbow’s were in the 12″ – 14″ range with a few up to 16″. Lewiston should continue to fish well this Fall and even into the Winter depending on water temps. If you don’t have time this Fall, book a trip for this coming Spring, April can be OUTSTANDING !
Steelhead continue to trickle in
- bad photo of a nice one !
Despite extremely low water fresh steelhead continue to trickle in to the Trinity, seems to be about a 50/50 mix of hatchery and wild. The flows have been UNDER 300 cfs in the Junction City, the lowest I think in more then a decade or more ! We’ve been boating a fair amount of adults considering the conditions.
Smolt Fest
It’s that time of the year when thousands of Steelhead Smolt’s gather to work there way out to the ocean, at times it’s nearly impossible to swing or drift your flies through a run without them being attacked. This will pass soon, it is a great sign for the future and a sign of a healthy river. Steelhead are currently spread from Willow Creek to Lewiston but not in any great numbers yet, if you can find a piece of un-pressured water your chances of success improve greatly. My November / December schedule is starting to fill, prime dates are limited, hope to see you this season.
Swing em Up !
- Nice Buck ! John
Started my Steelhead season off on the Trinity today…John swung up an Awesome Wild Buck on a small traditional fly mid-river today, Great way to start the season ! I’m sure many if not most all of you are doing or have done a rain dance, all I have to say is dance HARDER !
Blustery
- Jonathan with a chunky Bow
I had John and his Grandson Jonathan in my boat yesterday, the fishing was dead in the morning but picked up in the afternoon, the fish got pretty grabby on caddis imitations, unfortunetly the wind out of the North was brutal with gust’s to 40 MPH we did are best and boated a few.
Beautiful day but a little slow…
The Lower Sac fished a little slow for us today…it was Hap and Mike from Santa Rosa’s first trip to the Lower Sac and the fish failed to show them any love ! I don’t know what had the fish off of their game today ? lack of insect activity most likely but that’s fishing !The Guys still enjoyed a beautiful day on the Sac, even with the temps hovering around the century mark in Redding it felt more like the 80s on the river. There is no denying that California is in the midst of a historic drought and many rivers and streams throughout the state and especially in the Sierra are running at a trickle but there is some bright spots in the North State. The Lower Sac for one is currently running around 7000 cfs, great flows and chalk full of wild rainbows, the Fall river in Eastern Shasta County is full to the banks with clear cold spring water and is loaded with wild rainbows as well and finally the Trinity… the Trinity’s flow regime is set in place and being controlled by the dam at Trinity Lake, there is water in the lake to maintain the flows through the Summer, Fall and Winter. Steelhead will start arriving in the Trinity in numbers by late September, the water will be there the fish will be there… Will You !!!
Beautiful weather
The Lower Sac fished decent today, the morning started out slow but the grab started to pick up around 11 am and stayed fairly steady till about 4 pm and then seemed to shut down ! Both Steve and Kieth each hooked quite a few and even managed to land a few, some day’s it’s just like that… the bonus was they each landed some quality fish with Steve landing a 20″ slab !!!
Fishing Well !
- Emma and Bob “Grandpa” getting it done !
The Lower Sac is fishing well, the flow’s have stabilized around 7000 cfs and the fish have responded. There has been a steady hatch of May Flies from mid morning through early afternoon and a smattering of Caddis flies throughout the day. No time like the present to get out and enjoy one of the finest Wild trout fisheries in the Country!
